How martial arts teaches life values that last a lifetime.
At Woodford Taekwon-Do, we believe that Taekwon-Do isn’t just about kicks and punches—it’s about building strong minds and strong character.
That’s why every student, from their very first class, is introduced to the Five Tenets of Taekwon-Do: core values that guide everything we do inside and outside the dojang (training hall).
Let’s take a look at what they are—and why they’re so powerful for children.
1. Courtesy (Ye Ui) – Being Kind and Respectful
Courtesy teaches children:
How to treat others with respect
How to speak politely and listen well
How to take turns and help classmates
“We bow to our partners, use respectful language, and always say ‘thank you’—not just in Taekwon-Do, but in everyday life.”
This tenet helps children develop empathy and emotional intelligence early on.
2. Integrity (Yom Chi) – Doing the Right Thing, Even When No One Is Watching
Integrity helps children:
Understand the difference between right and wrong
Be honest with themselves and others
Take responsibility for their actions
“If a child makes a mistake in class, they learn it’s okay—as long as they own up and learn from it.”
This kind of accountability builds trust and maturity.
3. Perseverance (In Nae) – Never Giving Up
Perseverance teaches that:
Progress takes time, effort, and practice
It’s okay to fail, as long as you keep trying
Every small improvement counts
“Whether it’s mastering a tricky kick or earning a new belt, our students learn that consistency beats talent every time.”
This tenet gives kids resilience they can carry into school, sports, and life.
4. Self-Control (Guk Gi) – Staying Calm and Focused
Self-control helps with:
Managing big emotions (frustration, anger, excitement)
Staying focused in class and at school
Avoiding impulsive actions
“We teach students how to breathe, pause, and think before they act—essential for both safety and self-confidence.”
It’s especially helpful for children who are energetic or easily distracted.
5. Indomitable Spirit (Baekjul Boolgool) – Having Courage, No Matter What
This is about:
Standing up for what’s right
Staying strong under pressure
Believing in yourself even when it’s tough
“We don’t expect students to be fearless—but we teach them how to face challenges bravely.”
This final tenet nurtures a quiet kind of confidence—the kind that says “I can handle this.”
🧠 Why These Tenets Matter
Every child learns at a different pace—but these five principles help guide their growth as individuals, not just martial artists. They’re the values we reinforce in every warm-up, every sparring session, and every high five at the end of class.
At Woodford Taekwon-Do, it’s not just about physical skill—it’s about raising respectful, resilient, and responsible young people.
